Words to Pages Converter: How Many Pages Is Your Word Count?

Short answerIn 12-point Times New Roman on US Letter paper with 1-inch margins, a double-spaced page holds about 300 words and a single-spaced page about 600, so 1,000 words is roughly 3.3 pages double-spaced or 1.7 pages single-spaced. Font, size and spacing change this by up to a third.

How long is a 10-page paper?

A 10-page, double-spaced paper in 12-point Times New Roman is about 3,000 words of body text. In other fonts the same 10 pages hold roughly 2,400 words (Verdana 12) to 3,500 words (Calibri 11). Instructors decide whether the title page and the reference list count toward the page requirement, so check the assignment.

If your instructor gives a page count and you write in a font that holds more words per page, you will write more words for the same pages. When an assignment gives both a word count and a page count, the word count is the more precise target. A 10-page paper also usually needs more sources than a 5-page one: see how many sources for a research paper.

Why do online converters give different answers?

Many converters and quick answers assume round numbers: 250 words for a double-spaced page and 500 for a single-spaced one. When we captured the US Google results page for "how many pages is 1000 words" on October 23, 2026, the AI Overview answered about 4 pages double-spaced or 2 pages single-spaced, which is exactly that 250/500 assumption. Our measurement for 12-point Times New Roman gives about 300 and 600 words, so the round numbers overstate the page count by about 20%.

Reasons real pages differ:

  • Font: fonts differ in letter width. At the same size, Verdana sets far fewer words per line than Times New Roman.
  • Font size: 11-point text fits more lines and more words per line than 12-point.
  • Line height: each font has its own single line height. Calibri's is taller than Times New Roman's, which is why Calibri 12 holds fewer words per page than Times New Roman 12 despite narrower letters.
  • Layout: headings, block quotations, lists, tables and short paragraphs all take space without adding many words.
  • Your words: text with long technical terms fits fewer words per line.

How did we measure words per page?

We laid out real pages and counted, rather than dividing by a guess:

  1. Page: US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) with 1-inch margins on every side, which leaves a 6.5 x 9 inch text block.
  2. Text: ordinary academic prose (an original sample of about 300 words on a research topic), split into paragraphs with a 0.5-inch first-line indent and no extra space between them, the way APA-style body text is set.
  3. Line spacing: "single" uses each font's own built-in line height (taken from the font file), which approximates single spacing in a word processor; 1.5 and double multiply that height.
  4. Counting: a browser layout engine filled the text block word by word and recorded how many words fit on one page, for each font, size and spacing.
  5. Fonts: Times New Roman, Arial, Georgia and Verdana were measured with the standard font files. Calibri was measured with Carlito, a free font designed to have the same character widths as Calibri.

Word processors break lines slightly differently, and your own pages have headings and quotations, so allow about 10% either way.

What formatting do APA papers use?

If your class uses APA Style, two defaults matter for page counts. APA asks you to double-space all parts of the paper, including the reference list, with no extra space before or after paragraphs (APA Style), and to use 1-inch margins on every side (APA Style). APA accepts several fonts, for example 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial or 12-point Aptos (APA Style). Note how much these allowed fonts differ: in our measurement, 11-point Calibri fits about 17% more words on a double-spaced page than 12-point Times New Roman.

Why does my page count differ from the converter?

Does the reference list count toward the page count?

That is up to your instructor, and the same goes for the title page. Check the assignment sheet or ask.
